Top Ten List 2001

Vash the Stampede

To Whom It May Concern:

I have to confess that, with each passing year, this whole list-making thing fades ever more in satisfaction. While I still love film, I just don't have anywhere near the time or energy to pursue it with the reckless abandon of old. Atrophy has set in, and my once adventurous spirit is withering away, barely able to keep up with the trickle of worthwhile films coming out these days.

None of this is to say that my life is not in a very positive state right now. Though clearly not without frustrations, teaching math to high school students is proving an enjoyable vocation, and coaching Chess and Mathletes keeps me out of trouble (and out of theaters). On the personal front, my girlfriend fills my life with joy. For some reason, I find that spending time with her seems to rate a much higher priority than trudging out to catch up with some sure-to-be-mediocre movie, just to check it off some list. Go figure.

Anyway, the list on the right is this year's concession to the Top 10 phenomenon. I wouldn't place any real stock in the order, by the way. This is just a group of pretty solid films, though none seems truly without flaws (excepting perhaps the Maddin short...probably because it's short).
